Staying Fit without Going to the Gym

The gym isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t make it an excuse to never be active. That poses the question though: How else can I stay fit? Here are 5 interesting physical activities that can be done outside of the gym!

1. Rollerblading

This is an easy (and inexpensive) one formany people because they can use this as a way to get to and from work or class. Rollerblading is great for your leg muscles, but is also actually quite good for your overall body, as it requires quite a bit of balance (for which you will use your upper body). If you are uncomfortable learning on your own, than search for a roller rink near you. Most roller rinks will offer lessons for both roller skates AND roller blades.

2. Archery

Archery doesn’t necessarily work out the entirety of your body, but it is a great way to work your upper body and it makes for some great stories as well! Having fun is equally as important to a person’s well-being as staying fit and healthy is, so if you’re looking for a fun way to work out the upper body than archery may be for you. To start learning archery, use your search engine to find an archery range near you. Most ranges will offer lessons. Just remember to be safe and listen closely to your instructor!

3. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a wonderful workout for your entire body. Contrary to some peoples belief (that the horse does all the work), horseback riding takes a lot of effort on the riders part. From your legs and all the way up to your arms, you’ll definitely feel this workout the next day. This is especially the case if you take lessons or ride somewhere that will allow you to help with the cleaning and tacking of the horse(s), which is not only a good way to bond and feel comfortable with the horse, but also a great workout in and of itself. If you take English lessons (a style of riding that requires good posture), than this can also be a very easy way to work on correcting your posture.

4. Skiing/Snowboarding

If you live near the mountains than this is a great way to stay fit during the winter (or year round, depending on where you live). It isn’t unusual for people to have trouble staying active during the winter, but skiing or snowboarding can be a fun way to get out of the house during those snowy months. It’s also fun for both kids and adults so it can make for a fun and active family day or weekend trip.

5. Dance

Taking a dance class is yet another wonderful way to work out your entire body. It can also be a good option if you and your significant other are trying to either stay fit or lose weight together. There are many different types of dance to learn, from salsa, hip-hop, swing, foxtrot and many others. Search for dance studios in your area to see what classes they offer and don’t be afraid to try out several different types of dance. It may take some time for you to find something you love, but once you do, all that searching will be worth it.
