Home Remedies for Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, or more commonly known as pink eye, is a type of an infection of the eye which causes a lot of discomfort and itchiness. Also constantly tearing is no fun at all. It is also highly contagious, so you have to be very careful as you can pass it on to your close ones. In about seven to ten days the infection normally goes away. When there is any kind of allergies or bacterial or viral infection, there is inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye, and this is why conjunctivitis occurs. There are many home remedies that can provide relief and hasten the healing process. The remedies below will help you get rid of the inflammation, tears, redness and the mucus.

1. SALTWATER EYEWASH

Salt has great antiseptic properties so it will definitely help you get relief from some of the symptoms. Though keep in mind that it will sting a little. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water and let it get completely dissolved. Let it cool and use it several times in a day.

2. BORIC ACID EYEWASH

Boric acid is another wonderful home remedy that you can try. It is also antiseptic in nature and will help reduce many of the symptoms. You can make it the same way you would make the saltwater eyewash and use it to flush out your eyes to get instant relief.

3. HONEY

From a long time honey has been used as an antibiotic substance. It also has antibacterial powers. To make the eyewash you need to add three tablespoons of honey to two cups of water and boil it. Let it cool down and wash your eyes with it. It will make the healing process faster.

4. POTATOES

It might be hard to believe but potatoes are great at providing relief from eye infections. To decrease the redness and the swelling you need to put thin slices of a raw potato on your eyes. Do this several times in a day, but don’t use the same slices twice.

5. BLACK AND GREEN TEA

Bio-flavonoids have the property to reduce inflammation and fight against bacterial or viral infections. And luckily black and green tea is stuffed with them. You need to soak a few tea bags in water and put them on your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Throw them away after using them. The swelling will also reduce because of the tannin present in the tea.

6. CUCUMBER

You have probably seen people putting cucumber slices on their eyes when they are at a spa. It helps relax the eyes. But it can also be used as a remedy for pink eye. You need to put the cucumber slices in ice cold water for atleast 10 minutes and then place them on your eyes.

Though conjunctivitis often gets healed on its own, you can check with a doctor if it becomes too uncomfortable. Otherwise these home remedies will definitely soothe your eyes and heal it faster.
